We left for the airport kinda early (as we tend to do) and had a travel day to Jakarta. Man, it was a long flight! A quick hop to Seoul and then on down to Jakarta was 2h, then 7h... our plane was delayed because of mechanical trouble and we had to disembark and change to another aircraft. Ugh. I really thought that flight would never end.
Once we got into Jakarta and walked outside the airport, it was very clear that we were no longer in the cool, crisp air of the north... rather, we quickly learned that it can get stifling hot in that part of the world. And it was December! Sticky and humid...
Upon our arrival at close to midnight we had to walk about a mile in the airport from the gate to customs and cleared through OK, then took a van to the hotel that was about 30min. When we arrived it was slightly raining and there were lightning storms flickering in the distance. I could also smell the charcoal-scent of a raging wildfire somewhere in the distance.
We were in Jakarta for about three days; one of the shows that was scheduled got canceled so we had an entire day to ourselves and I ended connecting with an internet drum buddy. We went to the mall (indoors!) and had some great Indonesian food; I had some spicy rice noodles with some satay skewers that were pretty good. We then went and had coffee and talked for almost two hours.
The next day (Sunday) we played the gig in this sports arena that was really boomy and hearing was somewhat difficult, due to the fact that every time I hit my kick and snare it was if there were a crazy amount of reverb cranked on it. It was just the room and our FOH guy Victor made it work.
